Biography

Ryner Viray is a Filipino filmmaker based in Manila, Philippines. He recently earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Film from the University of the Philippines Film Institute. His undergraduate thesis film, Ang Luha ay Bahagi ng Karagatan (2025), was recognized for its restrained yet emotionally complex storytelling, inspired by his lived experiences with addiction, mental health, and generational trauma. Drawing from a blend of transcendental cinema and psychological realism, the film has been lauded for its visual and narrative precision. It is currently being submitted to both local and international film festivals. He previously edited long-form documentaries, ads, and social media content for local and international clients. He also served as director and producer for UP Diliman’s commemorative programs for the “100 Years of Broadcasting in the Philippines” (2022), which aired on DZUP. As a queer and formerly rehabilitated filmmaker, Ryner's body of work interrogates systems of control, healing, and identity within Filipino societal structures. His creative practice leans toward the deeply personal and political, crafting stories that confront shame, longing, and survival with quiet intensity within an economically hierarchical society. Ryner is currently working as a freelance video editor, producer, and production manager while developing his next narrative short film.
